Anchored by volcanic peaks and rolling hills that tumble to the Pacific, the city of San Luis Obispo—which bears the same name as its surrounding county—has an appealing downtown restaurant scene, and dozens of parks for hiking and mountain biking. It’s also the gateway to three wine-growing regions—Edna Valley, Arroyo Grande, and Paso Robles—with more than 250 wineries and tasting rooms.

It’s no wonder that San Luis Obispo was recognized by National Geographic and Oprah Winfrey as the happiest city in the country. It’s also striving to be one of the most sustainable: The city has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2035, which has led to the installation of nearly 200 EV vehicle charging stations, among other initiatives.

Check out the complete guide to San Luis Obispo, or SLO, as locals call it, below.

Downtown San Luis Obispo

This Central Coast city prides itself on its pedestrian-friendly downtown, filled with historic buildings in styles from Spanish Colonial to Victorian. The oldest and most stately is the whitewashed Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded by the Spaniards in 1772 and still in service for daily mass. Free, docent-led tours show off the mission’s centuries-old art and architecture and tour its serene garden. If you hear the mission bells ring, know that someone is pulling the ropes—local volunteers do the job at 12 noon and 6 p.m. daily.

A short stroll away, the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art displays contemporary works by Central Coast artists—including a massive mural on its exterior wall—and offers classes, films, lectures, and concerts. One block farther, the San Luis Obispo Children's Museum features interactive exhibits that spark kids’ creativity.

Iconic Landmarks and Photo Stops in San Luis Obispo

Downtown SLO—which has an unmistakable college-town energy, thanks to the presence of California Polytechnic University—has offbeat landmarks, too, like Instagram-famous Bubblegum Alley, a 70-foot-long pedestrian passageway covered in already-been-chewed gum (an estimated 2 million pieces).

On Monterey Street, look for the remains of an American icon: the world’s first motel (an abbreviation of “motor hotel”). Opened in 1925 and abandoned in 1991, the Milestone Mo-Tel—later renamed the Motel Inn—revolutionized the way motorists road-tripped, with affordable conveniences like hot showers and indoor carpeting.

Many historic landmarks in San Luis Obispo have been beautifully preserved, like the 1941 Art Deco–style Fremont Theater, which hosts live music and comedy shows. Another architectural gem is the Ah Louis Store, a two-story Italianate structure built in the city’s Chinatown in 1884. Today it’s a retail shop carrying locally made gifts, souvenirs, and party goods.

The Downtown San Luis Obispo Farmer's Market

San Luis Obispo Events

Downtown San Luis Obispo is most vibrant on Thursday nights when the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market takes place. This weekly fiesta fills five blocks of Higuera Street with sizzling barbecue, live music, and stalls brimming with produce, baked goods, and specialty items from more than 100 growers, vendors, and food purveyors. (Make sure to taste the Santa Maria barbecue, a Central Coast favorite.)

Film buffs show up every April for the SLO International Film Festival, a multiday celebration of contemporary and classic film that’s been taking place since 1993. Screenings take place at various venues around town, including the Fremont Theater and The Palm Theatre, home to the nonprofit SLO Film Center.

On the first Friday of every month, SLO County Arts presents Art After Dark, a free, self-guided walk around downtown’s galleries, studios, tasting rooms, eateries, and retail shops. Many businesses host live music or artist talks. From mid-June through early September, another source of Friday night fun is Concerts in the Plaza, a weekly series of free, family-friendly, live music performances.

San Luis Obispo Craft Breweries

Craft beer fans sip their way through the SLO craft beer scene at a host of local breweries. There’s venerable SLO Brew, brewing since 1988, with two locations at The Rock and The Lofts; and fun-loving Libertine Brewing Co., host to live music and weekly salsa and line-dancing events. At Oak and Otter Brewing Co., nondrinkers feel right at home—the brewers concoct fizzy nonalcoholic beverages alongside a line-up of ales, porters, and stouts.

Visit The Hub location of Central Coast Brewing Co. to sip delicious brews and admire a museum-quality collection of vintage bicycles. And if you’re seeking the SLO brewery with the most intriguing name, it’s a toss-up between Humdinger Brewing and There Does Not Exist.

At the SLO Public Market, you can shop Bottlecraft’s collection of hard-to-find brews from around the world and peruse 30 taps, then pair your pick with a meal from a neighboring eatery. The market hall houses Bing’s bao buns, Humble Oven’s pizzas, Jay Bird’s hot chicken sandwiches, California Tacos’ burrito bowl, and more.

San Luis Obispo Wineries

Winemaking in the area dates back to the 1700s, and today San Luis Obispo’s wine production is centered in Edna Valley, a region known for cool, ocean-influenced growing conditions that are ideal for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Small-production wineries welcome visitors with no-fuss tasting rooms and spectacular views. Head to standouts such as Edna Valley Vineyard and Claiborne & Churchill Winery, acclaimed for its estate Riesling. Don’t miss the Chardonnay at Biddle Ranch Vineyard or a curated food-and-wine pairing at Tolosa. Back in town, discover varietals from an assortment of Central Coast wineries at Central Coast Wines.

Restaurants in San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo’s dining scene marries locally sourced ingredients with globally inspired recipes. Dine on Spanish-style paella, colorful tapas, and creative cocktails at Mission Plaza's Luna Red. Head over to Higuera Street to taste Ethiopian cuisine at Ebony. Choose an entrée from the worldly menu at Novo Restaurant and Lounge, where you can dine alfresco overlooking San Luis Creek. The Thai green curry and Korean short ribs are local favorites.

If your tastes lean toward classic dishes, book a table at upscale steakhouse Ox & Anchor at Hotel San Luis Obispo, or Italian-accented Nate’s on Marsh, housed in a charming 1908 bungalow. Both restaurants have earned praise from the Michelin Guide.

San Luis Obispo has plenty of casual dining, too. Start your day by dawdling over espresso in the back garden at Linnaea's Cafe. At lunch, stop in to Eureka! for burgers and sweet potato fries (try the arugula fig burger with goat cheese). Any time you want a sweet pick-me-up, zip over to Negranti Creamery for small-batch ice cream.

Outdoor Activities in San Luis Obispo

With all the great dining and drinking in San Luis Obispo, you’ll definitely want to burn some calories. The 720-acre Irish Hills Natural Reserve lives up to its name in winter and spring as the landscape turns a vivid emerald green. The trails here were built with mountain bikers in mind—expect plenty of swoopy turns and gentle-to-moderate grades. A short drive from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, West Cuesta Ridge is laced with biking and hiking trails in Los Padres National Forest, with vistas that extend all the way to the Pacific. Skinny tires are welcome in San Luis Obispo, too: The Bob Jones City-to-Sea Trail offers an easy ride to Avila Beach on a paved path.

Hike the Nine Sisters

The Nine Sisters—a series of volcanic plugs or morros—dot the coast from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay. For a moderately challenging workout, hike to the top of Bishop Peak, the tallest “Sister” at 1,559 feet. The view from the summit is one of the Central Coast’s best. Another view-rich trail ascends to the top of Cerro San Luis, the second-tallest morro at 1,292 feet. (The path starts near the Madonna Inn, so many hikers call this peak Madonna Mountain.) For an easy Nine Sisters summit, follow the trail to the top of Islay Hill, which tops out at 776 feet.

Day Trips from San Luis Obispo

For a quick detour, drive west from San Luis Obispo to the coastline at Montaña de Oro State Park. Admire the wind- and wave-carved sea arches at Spooner Cove and watch surfers tackle swells at Hazard Reef, or walk along the scenic blufftop trail. Then push north for another 10 miles to the quaint bayside town of Morro Bay.

Fifteen minutes south of San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach offers all the delights of a laid-back beach town. You can stroll the pier, picnic on the sand, or watch the surfers ride the waves. To the north, Paso Robles is a 35-minute drive, and its downtown boasts chic tasting rooms and bucket list restaurants to stay into the evening so you can see the glowing outdoor light installations at Sensorio Paso Robles.

Another great day-trip destination lies an hour away in San Simeon: the magnificent Hearst Castle. Guided tours lead visitors through William Randolph Hearst’s 115-room mansion, filled with European tapestries, two ultra-posh pools, Norman fireplaces, and ornately carved ceilings.

Where to Stay in San Luis Obispo

The Michelin Key–awarded Hotel SLO oozes luxury, as does the onsite Sol Spa and the aforementioned Ox + Anchor steakhouse. Get a soothing massage, spend some time at the rooftop terrace and wine bar, and savor the views from your room’s balcony or terrace.

Petit Soleil’s 17 French-inspired rooms suit visitors seeking a bed-and-breakfast experience. Downtown’s red-brick Hotel Cerro offers 65 urban-stylish rooms and suites. Visit the hotel’s edible garden, which supplies produce for the kitchen at onsite Brasserie SLO.

But for an overnight stay peppered with unforgettable character, book a “theme room” at the landmark Madonna Inn. This over-the-top hotel has drawn generations of travelers eager to experience its 110 elaborately and eccentrically decorated rooms, like the Caveman (with rock walls and a waterfall shower) and the Vous (with a circular bed). If you can’t squeeze in an overnight stay, at least stop by for a slice of the bakery’s Pink Champagne Cake.
