It’s impossible to mistake Morro Bay for any other California seaside town. Just off its shore, a massive, ancient volcanic plug known as Morro Rock rises 576 feet from the ocean, adding a dramatic exclamation point to this haven of natural beauty. Where Is Morro Bay?

Morro Bay sits along California's Central Coast, right on scenic Highway 1 (aka the Pacific Coast Highway), about 15 minutes northwest of San Luis Obispo, the closest larger city and gateway to nearby Highway 101. You can’t climb Morro Rock, but you can look for the peregrine falcons that nest there. For gentler waters, the South Jetty beach breaks offer more forgiving conditions, and the Sandspit—accessible only by paddling across the bay or hiking through Montaña de Oro State Park—is a favorite among locals seeking powerful, uncrowded breaks.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

With its protected estuary, mild year-round temperatures, and abundant wildlife, Morro Bay is one of the Central Coast's premier kayaking destinations. Calm, sheltered waters make it approachable for first-timers, while the shadow of Morro Rock and the surrounding sand spit offer plenty to explore for more experienced paddlers. Glide quietly through the National Estuary and there's a good chance of spotting sea otters, harbor seals, and dozens of bird species, with dolphins occasionally making an appearance farther out toward the harbor mouth.

Explore the Town of Morro Bay

There’s plenty to see within the town on foot, too: Beaches stretch north and south of town, perfect for strolling with a view of Morro Rock. Landlubbers can hike the area’s many trails or simply explore the Embarcadero, a waterfront street with shops and restaurants. 

A few blocks inland on Main St. is the Art Center Morro Bay, a gallery where local artists display their work, ranging from paintings and prints to jewelry, sculpture, cards, and more. 

For a dose of local flavor, check out the Morro Bay Main Street Farmers Market, a weekly gathering of area growers and vendors, or challenge a friend to a match on the Giant Chessboard downtown. Of interest to Half Ironman enthusiasts is the Ironman 70.3 Morro Bay event that happens annually in May and consists of a 1.2-mile protected swim in Morro Bay, followed by the 56-mile biking section through rolling hills and vineyards, and finally a 13.1-mile run that finishes along the Embarcadero. Another annual event that draws visitors from far and wide is the World Surf League’s SLO CAL Open at Morro Bay and Pismo Beach, held every December and January, respectively.

Start your day with the crème brûlée French toast at local hangout Frankie & Lola’s Front Street Cafe. Later, watch as the sun begins its slow descent behind Morro Rock while tucking into “naked fish” (simple, with sauces on the side) at The Galley Seafood Grill & Bar, where dishes incorporate ingredients direct from the head chef’s family farm. Visit Morro Bay Oyster Co. to handpick and shuck your own Pacific Gold oysters; the restaurant contributes to the health of the local ecosystem through its sustainable practices. Or check out the family-owned The Dutchie (formerly known as Dutchman’s Seafood House), which has its own dock—so you can count on just-caught seafood.

If you’re more thirsty than hungry, cap off an afternoon with a pour at one of the Embarcadero's tasting rooms, such as Absolution Cellars or Vino Estero, before settling in for a classic Central Coast sunset over the bay.

Morro Bay Insider Tips

• Explore the tide pools at North Point Beach: Most visitors know about Morro Rock, but few realize that at very low tide, a staircase at the end of Toro Lane leads down to tide pools tucked among the rock formations at North Point Beach, north of downtown. Since they're only exposed during the lowest tides, it takes a bit of planning (checking a tide chart) to catch them.
• Go to Black Hill for sunset views: Rather than watching the sunset from the Embarcadero with everyone else, locals often hike up Black Hill in Morro Bay State Park for an elevated, wide-angle view of Morro Rock and the bay below.
• Walk through the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve: Don’t miss this quiet, lesser-known nature preserve just across the estuary in Los Osos, with boardwalks and viewing platforms overlooking the back bay.
