California Questionnaire: Kathy Ireland

California Questionnaire: Kathy Ireland

The Santa Barbara–based supermodel and entrepreneur cherishes the abundant activities available along the Central Coast

Though her name and image are known and celebrated worldwide, Kathy Ireland’s heart will forever be happiest at home in California. With a smile as sunny as the state’s coastlines, the three-time Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue cover subject has parlayed her status as one of the most successful supermodels in the 1980s and 90s into her role as CEO and founder of her Kathy Ireland Worldwide, a billion-dollar global business brand.

The Glendale-born powerhouse basks in her role as wife and mother of three, and she’s also an accomplished author and a tireless philanthropist who serves as an ambassador for the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, while championing a host of other philanthropic causes close to her heart.

When she’s not conquering the worlds of fashion, entertainment, and business—or working on her ever-growing list of corporate and philanthropic endeavors—Ireland loves to soak up as much of California as possible and explore all that the state has to offer, from the freshest farmers’ markets and brightest beaches to its spectacular skiing, seafood, and beyond.

Where do you live? Santa Barbara. I’m a seventh-generation Californian.

Why there? Our family has resided in Santa Barbara since I was 3 years old. This is one of the most beautiful locations on Earth.

Who or what is your greatest California love? My husband Greg Olsen! He also grew up in Santa Barbara. Greg is a husband, dad, grandpa, an emergency room physician, and captain and founder of his fishing industry, 4th Watch Seafood, our state’s premier purveyor of fresh, delicious seafood and varieties of fish. And yes, Greg is the most awesome catch—pun intended. He’s my hero!

What is the biggest misperception about Californians? The stereotype that we lack intelligence is definitely not true.

What is your favorite Golden State splurge? Living in California is a splurge! Our love of the ocean, mountains, and weather is priceless.

Time for a road trip—where are you going? California is one of the most geographically diverse places in the world. Before embarking on the road trip, I would stop by my personal favorite camping store, Camping World, and stock up on all the needed camping supplies. An ideal road trip would begin just across the border in Baja California, where the beauty of the coastal desert is experienced. From there it would go through San Diego and La Jolla. Then the trip would veer east to Joshua Tree to camp under the stars and a drive through the Mojave Desert (springtime is gorgeous!). Next, head west to Laguna Beach to take in the beauty of the south coast. From there, it’s up the coast to Santa Barbara for hiking, surfing, biking, scuba diving at the Channel Islands, boating, and fishing. A visit to Stearns Wharf where you can shop and enjoy the best 4th Watch Seafood at Santa Barbara Shellfish Company, all while taking in the beauty of the majestic Pacific Ocean. Another great place to dine in Santa Barbara is Secret Boa. Amazing cuisine.

Next I would head up the coast for the charm of Los Alamos. This town is a little-known jewel and home to one of the country’s very best Michelin restaurants, Bell’s. Next up is Big Sur for spectacular beauty. Ripplewood Resort offers quaint creekside cabins that gives a feel of camping, yet with all the comforts of home.

What is your favorite way to play in California? I love spending as much time as I can with my family and friends as we surf, hike, and bike together.

Where would you go for the ultimate shopping spree in California? I love the art fair on Cabrillo Blvd. each weekend in Santa Barbara. Local artisans offer the most unique arts, crafts, and special gifts. And the Farmer's Market in Carpinteria has the very best avocados and honey.

Best California song? “California Girls” by The Beach Boys, because it’s a happy song. It brings back memories of when I was 12 years old and purchased my very first surfboard, an Andreini Owl, for $13. I was inspired to learn to surf by listening to that music!

How would your California dream day unfold? I'd be sure to get to the beach before the sun rises with a blanket, my Bible, and coffee. The morning would be spent surfing with friends followed by a big breakfast at Esau’s in Carpinteria. Then I’d go hiking with the dogs, then ride my bike some before spending the day at the beach with friends and family. The perfect way to end it would be taking a sunset walk on the beach with my husband and enjoying a picnic dinner together.
