Home to such one-name icons as Ellen and Oprah, the ultra-exclusive enclave of Montecito rises from a gorgeous stretch of coast and into the foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains. A celebrity retreat for nearly a century, ever since the days when Charlie Chaplin opened the landmark Montecito Inn, this Santa Barbara County community is one of the country’s most expensive residential areas.

The good news is you don’t have to be an A-lister to get a taste of the good life, Montecito-style. Take your pick of several classic California resorts, visit the lovely beaches, and dine on top-notch Central Coast cuisine.

Where Is Montecito?

Montecito sits just off U.S. Highway 101, about five minutes from downtown Santa Barbara and roughly 90 minutes northwest of Los Angeles, on a stretch of the Central Coast known as the American Riviera.

Montecito Beaches

Montecito's coastline offers some of the most inviting beaches on the Central Coast. Butterfly Beach, located across from the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara, is especially popular for sunrise and sunset walks, picnics, and paddleboarding. Unlike many California beaches, it faces south, often creating calm conditions and spectacular evening light. Nearby Miramar Beach is a favorite with families thanks to its gentle surf and wide stretch of sand, while Hammonds Beach attracts swimmers, beach walkers, and kayakers looking for a quieter seaside experience.

While Montecito is a rather private community, upscale Coast Village Road is this sophisticated town’s Main Street, the place where locals gather for shopping and dining. At Maison K, Santa Barbara native Kimberly Phillips Hayes has created a unique lifestyle boutique with a thoughtfully curated collection that ranges from cashmere capes imported from Italy to antique Syrian shell mirrors.

Nearby, Silverhorn crafts fine jewelry from precious materials, and Occhiali Fine Eyewear stocks an extensive selection of couture eyewear from designers across Europe and the U.S. For home goods and gifts, True Love Always offers a highly curated mix of lifestyle and decor pieces.

Even if you aren’t planning on making a lot of purchases, the relaxed atmosphere here makes it just as enjoyable for window-shopping as serious retail therapy.

Despite its small size, Montecito has earned a reputation as one of the Central Coast's premier dining destinations. Enjoy refined California cuisine at Lucky's, a longtime local favorite known for its steaks and fun atmosphere, or dine at Caruso's, the oceanfront restaurant at Rosewood Miramar Beach, where seasonal ingredients and sweeping Pacific views take center stage. Tre Lune, meanwhile, is the place to dig into a plate of authentic pastas perfectly complemented by the charmingly old-school vibe.

With its savory croissants and flakey, buttery kouign-amann, Bree’Osh Artisan Bakery is a can’t-miss. Reserve another breakfast or brunch for Jeannine's Bakery & Restaurant, which has been serving locals and visitors alike for decades. Another lunch or dinner option is Honor Bar, where you’ll find polished comfort food in an elegant setting. Where to Stay in Montecito

Take your pick of several classic resorts, including the previously mentioned Montecito Inn, opened nearly a century ago as a celebrity retreat. On the other end of history, one of the newest resorts in town is the luxurious Rosewood Miramar Beach Montecito, which opened in early 2019 along one of the Santa Barbara area’s most beautiful beaches. The stunning property boasts two pools (a family-friendly location and an adults only cabana collection), a Rosewood spa, goop boutique store, direct access to the beach, and the Rosewood Explorers programs for children of every age

While the Miramar blends an easygoing beach cottage atmosphere with contemporary elegance, the nearby Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara fully embraces the vintage romance of the American Riviera. Opened in 1927, the resort along dreamy Butterfly Beach has a lobby with graceful archways and painted ceiling beams, while its airy Spanish Colonial–style rooms are situated in buildings and bungalows that ramble across 22 lushly landscaped acres. Meanwhile up in the foothills, San Ysidro Ranch boasts its own storied history as the location where John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy honeymooned in 1953.

Montecito Estates You Can Visit

Though a Montecito estate is likely beyond your price range, you can tour a pair of classic properties for an inside glimpse of the local grandeur. A must for horticulture lovers, Lotusland is a botanical garden created by Madame Ganna Walska, a renowned opera singer originally from Poland, who moved here in 1941. Over more than four decades, she established 25 different gardens on the Eden-like estate, where rare cycads and 300 species of cacti thrive. (Advance reservations are required and often sell out well ahead of time.)

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and considered one of the country’s finest Spanish Colonial Revival buildings, Casa del Herrero was designed by leading Santa Barbara architect George Washington Smith. Built in 1925 for industrialist George Fox Steedman, the estate is virtually unchanged since its glory days, and tours (by reservation) explore both the house’s interior and its period gardens. Hiking Trails Near Montecito

Beyond the beaches, Montecito provides easy access to a network of hiking trails climbing into the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Los Padres National Forest. The trail to Inspiration Point rewards hikers with views of the coastline and Channel Islands, while Cold Spring Trail follows a shaded creek before opening to vistas of Montecito and the ocean, with the option to continue on to the summit of Montecito Peak for a more strenuous climb. Hot Springs Canyon Trail offers a moderate, oak-shaded route that passes the ruins of a historic 19th-century resort before reaching a cluster of natural geothermal pools where hikers can soak.

For a longer trek, the San Ysidro Trail winds along San Ysidro Creek past a seasonal waterfall and rocky canyon walls favored by local climbers, eventually connecting to Cold Spring Trail for those looking to combine the two into a full day in the foothills. Most trailheads sit just minutes from Montecito's village center, with parking that tends to fill early on weekends.
