Most people know it as the gateway to Hearst Castle, but even without its famous neighbor, Cambria’s creative vibe and its setting—beautiful pine forests and open space along a craggy stretch of the California coast—make it an irresistible destination.

Where Is Cambria?

Cambria is in San Luis Obispo County, located along Highway 1, roughly midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles—about 225 miles and four hours' drive from either city. It sits about 30 miles north of the city of San Luis Obispo and just 6 miles south of Hearst Castle in San Simeon.

Things to Do in Cambria

For such a small community (just 6,000 residents), Cambria has many moods. On the inland side of Highway 1, Cambria’s commercial area is divided into two distinct sections along Main Street. With some buildings dating to the 19th century, its East Village is the oldest part of town, filled with antique shops, art galleries, and local dining rooted in Cambria's history.

About three-quarters of a mile away, the West Village picks up the same eclectic, coastal spirit with its own cluster of boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, plus easy access to the coastal trails at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve. Both villages are entirely walkable, connected by a stretch of Main Street lined with independent shops that reward a slow, unhurried wander.

Moonstone Beach

Across Highway 1 from the East Village is perhaps Cambria’s best-known attraction: Moonstone Beach. Named for the smooth, quartz-like stones that wash ashore along its rocky coves, Moonstone Beach anchors the western side of town. A wooden boardwalk winds for about a mile above the shoreline, connecting Santa Rosa Creek to Leffingwell Landing with benches, viewpoints, and easy access down to the beach itself.

Time a visit here for low tide and you can explore rocky tide pools thick with anemones, urchins, and hermit crabs, or simply comb the sand for driftwood, sea glass, and the beach's namesake stones. Come evening, the boardwalk's westward-facing views make it one of the Central Coast's best places to watch the sun sink into the Pacific.

For a different vantage point, book a kayak tour along Moonstone Beach's rugged coastline, where paddlers can spot sea otters, seabirds, and the occasional migrating whale between December and April.

More Outdoor Fun in Cambria

Hikers, bikers, and photographers have plenty of options here. 

• Fiscalini Ranch Preserve: At the 437-acre Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, an extensive trail network follows the coastline and climbs into serene pine forests 400 feet above the ocean.

• Fern Canyon Preserve: Follow the easy 1.5-mile Henry Kluck Memorial Trail that ventures through this woodsy land. Virtually any trail offers expansive views of the turquoise waters of the Pacific meeting the Central Coast.

• Coastal Cowboy: Covell Ranch offers guided horseback rides through rolling hills and pine forest just outside town, while anglers, surfers, and whale watchers head to San Simeon State Park, just a few miles north. 

• Behold the Beautiful  Blubber on the Beach:  Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery—home to thousands of massive elephant seals hauled out on the beach—is a short, free drive up the coast.

The Arts in Cambria

In the former Bank of Cambria building, The Vault Gallery showcases the art of leading plein air painters, as well as contemporary works by the likes of Billy Zane, co-star of Titanic. You can also browse through several galleries in this area—including Ephraim Pottery, where you’ll find pieces by owner Kevin Hicks, as well as handcrafted furniture and lamps.

Nearby, Artifacts Gallery has been a Main Street fixture for more than 25 years, with a sprawling collection of paintings, sculpture, blown glass, and garden art curated by owner Thad Markham. 

The town's creative streak extends beyond gallery walls, too: the Cambria Center for the Arts has hosted visual and performing arts since 1947, staging plays, concerts, and winter’s four-day Cambria Film Festival in its 100-seat theater. 

Even a stroll through town doubles as an open-air gallery, with murals scattered throughout including a wildflower mural, with their common and Latin names listed, at Slabtown Mercantile.

Dining and drinks in Cambria range from small-town charm to elegant fare. Plenty of people stop in Cambria just for a slice of the famous olallieberry pie at Linn’s Restaurant, which is why it’s at the top of this list:

• Best for wine and an evening meal: Madeline's Restaurant & Wine Tasting Room in the West Village, pouring Central Coast wines by day and serving dishes like lamb shank and pan-seared duck breast by night
