How to Splurge or Save in Sacramento

From Michelin-star dining to epic pizza slices, the City of Trees appeals to any budget

Home to California’s longest river, tree-lined streets, and lush greenery as far as the eye can see, Sacramento is a natural playground where outdoor fun is a given. But as the Golden State’s capital city, it’s also an urban oasis filled with a melting pot of culinary experiences, sophisticated spots to post up with a drink, and made-to-measure boutiques. From swanky downtown hotels and award-winning fine dining to laid-back breweries and waterfront views, there are two sides to Sactown. Here’s how to explore this dynamic city on any budget.

Waterfront adventures

Splurge: With two major waterways running through it, Sacramento is an ideal hub for water sports enthusiasts. Spend an exhilarating day on the Sacramento River with a private wakeboard, wakesurf, or kneeboard lesson from Wake Up Wakeboarding School. Led by two U.S. Coast Guard–certified captains, the experience is tailored to all skill levels—whether you're just starting out or looking to level up. A half-day session costs $425; for the full-day adventure, plan to spend $850.

Save: For a more relaxed and budget-friendly aquatic experience, head 15 minutes east to Lake Natoma. The calm, scenic lake is perfect for paddling, and the Sacramento State Aquatic Center offers affordable rentals for all kinds of gear. Single kayaks start at just $10 for the first hour; for $12, you can opt for a tandem kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard.

Culinary surprises

Splurge: In America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital, dining is a celebration of both place and season. Among Sacramento’s 15 Michelin-recognized restaurants is Localis, which earned a coveted one star for its seasonal, contemporary cuisine and imaginative approach to fine dining. Chef Christopher Barnum-Dann’s 10-course tasting menu ($197 per person) changes out every six weeks so you’ll never have the same experience twice. Add the Time and Place beverage pairing ($330) to enjoy each dish with an exquisite wine hand-selected by the chef.

Another standout culinary splurge can be found at Kru, where dinner comes with a show. Saddle up to the sleek sushi bar, order the omakase ($200 per person) and watch knife-wielding chefs do their thing over the course of an unforgettable three hours. Revel in bite-sized sturgeon sprinkled with caviar—a specialty of Sacramento, which is responsible for 80 percent of the nation’s supply.

Save: Want to save a few (hundred) dollars? Smash a slice over at Pizzasaurus Rex. Housed in a former diner, the casual spot serves rectangular, “grandma-style” pies with natural wines. Go for the rotating special Dino Slice ($6.75), piled with creative toppings like pepperoni, pineapple, jalapeño, and garlic oil.

Raise a glass in style

Splurge: Is there any better way to celebrate than with a big bottle of bubbly? At Fizz Champagne & Bubble Bar in Downtown Sacramento, bottles line the wall of the trendy space that serves more than 150 different sparkling wines. Sip on a flight of prestige Champagnes ($99) or pop a bottle of 1990 Louis Roederer Cristal for the table ($14,000).

Save: At McConnell’s Estate Winery in Elk Grove, taste award-winning wines inside a lovingly restored 100-year-old farmhouse surrounded by vineyards. The $10 fee is waived with a bottle purchase (most are under $30). Time your visit on a Sunday between April and October to catch their free Listening on the Lawn series, where from 1 to 4 p.m. the winery’s lawn comes alive with live music from local artists.

Shopping in the capital city

Splurge: Retail therapy is a diverse experience in the city, where major retailers are situated alongside specialty boutiques and souvenir shops. For a luxe shopping experience, visit a Sactown mainstay dating back to 1922: Once a K Street haberdashery founded by Julius Analpolsky, the third-generation owner continues the Julius Clothing tradition of outfitting well-heeled men with designer apparel and accessories from brands like Zegna and Brunello Cucinelli. Get a made-to-measure look starting at $1,500 with the help of a style advisor, who will guide you in choosing the right fabric, lining, and finishing touches.

Save: Sometimes the best way to save is to take a trip back in time. Discover throwback prices at Stardust Vintage Emporium, a 13,000-square-foot wonderland for retro enthusiasts. Find one-of-a-kind pieces like a 1960s hot-pink 1960s raincoat, 1970s leather wedge loafers, or a 1980s crushed velvet skirt-and-jacket set—all for 35 bucks or less.

Historic rides

Splurge: Back in the day, Sacramento was a major rail hub and home to the first incorporated railroad in the state. Splurge on a nostalgic ride aboard the Old Vine Express departing from the River Fox Train station. The two-hour journey ($159) winds through Yolo County along a 14-mile stretch of track built in 1911. Along the way, savor a guided flight of five wines with a seasonal canapé pairing. For a more interactive evening, sign up for the murder mystery dinner ($200). The onboard show invites you to engage with a motley crew of suspects as you try to discover whodunnit before the final whistle blows.

Save: Take to the seas with the Historic River Cruise from City Cruises, where for just over $30 you can board a yacht on the Sacramento River. During the one-hour trip, you’ll navigate past the Delta King and Tower Bridge as the captain shares fun facts about California’s capital
