L.A.’s Rooftop Retreats

Relaxing atmosphere, exceptional views, and awesome cocktails

The sun sliding below the western horizon, a blanket of city lights spread out at your feet, the Hollywood Sign glowing from its hillside perch—these are memorable sights from any vantage point, but there’s nothing quite like taking them in from a rooftop in the middle of Los Angeles. One of the best things about L.A. is the weather, and sunny days offer an extra bonus: warm evenings and nights. So relaxing outside, perhaps on cushy banquettes around a swimming pool glowing with cool blue light—well, it doesn’t get much sexier than that.

The following is a list of some of the best rooftop bars in Los Angeles.

Sushi Samba

For a sultry, see-and-be-seen experience, head to Sushi Samba.  This West Hollywood spot is known for its vibrant fusion of Japanese, Brazilian, and Peruvian flavors, pairing inventive sushi and seafood dishes with a lively atmosphere, rooftop views, and handcrafted cocktails.

Rooftop at the Palihouse

Those preferring a lower profile should retreat to the nearby Rooftop at the Palihouse. Lush greenery, stylish chairs, and chic lanterns complement 360-degree views and hibiscus cocktails. The intimate rooftop feels more like a private garden party than a buzzy nightlife destination, making it an ideal spot for a sunset drink, a leisurely brunch, or a relaxed evening above the city.

Petit Ermitage

For a brush with the super exclusive, book a room at WeHo’s Petit Ermitage. Open only to hotel guests, the rooftop is pure magic with its saltwater pool, seasonal cocktails, and a butterfly garden so legit it’s recognized as a sanctuary by the National Wildlife Federation. Plush daybeds, candlelit corners, and sweeping views of the Hollywood Hills add to the dreamy atmosphere, making it feel worlds away from the bustle of Sunset Boulevard just below.

Flora

If you prefer to be closer to the water, a straight shot south of the city is the L.A. County town of El Segundo, where garden-to-table small plates and botanically inspired cocktails are served at the rooftop Flora, just a few miles from beach.

Kassi

Farther north in Venice, Kassi offers a breezy coastal take on the Italian supper club. Located inside Hotel Erwin just steps from the Venice Boardwalk, the stylish rooftop restaurant pairs ocean views with wood-fired pizzas, house-made pastas, and Mediterranean-inspired dishes, while a lineup of spritzes, wines, and craft cocktails keeps the mood firmly in vacation mode.

The Roof on Wilshire

Another excellent option is The Roof on Wilshire, above the Hotel Wilshire in the heart of Downtown. Relax on wraparound banquettes to watch the skyline light up, and sip on one of the bar’s signature mule-style drinks until the stars come out. The rooftop’s plunge pool and unobstructed 360-degree views are major draws, offering a front-row seat to sunsets, twinkling city lights, and the iconic Hollywood Sign in the distance.

Spire 73

Also in the Downtown neighborhood is the literal pinnacle of the city’s nightlife: Spire 73, which sits atop the Intercontinental Hotel and is the highest outdoor bar in the Western Hemisphere. Perched 73 stories above the city, the sleek rooftop lounge pairs craft cocktails, wine, and small plates with sweeping views that stretch from the Hollywood Hills to the Pacific Ocean on clear days.

The Fonda Theatre

If you want a spot where you’re guaranteed to be entertained, head to The Fonda Theatre, where rooftop guests can watch a live feed of the night’s performance. Originally opened in 1926 and named for actor Henry Fonda following a 1980s renovation, the historic Hollywood venue pairs its rooftop bar with views of the Capitol Records Building, craft cocktails, and one of the city’s most distinctive concert-going experiences.
