California Questionnaire: Abbey Romeo Shares Her California Gems

The ‘Love on the Spectrum’ star reveals her favorite SoCal spots

Abbey Romeo is one of the breakout stars of Netflix’s hit Love on the Spectrum. In the series, which follows the story of singles on the autism spectrum as they navigate dating, Abbey shares her unique insights about life and romance.

Abbey met and began dating her boyfriend David through the show. Her heartfelt original song “Boyfriend Forever,” which she dedicated to him in season 3, is still melting hearts.

Abbey lives with her family in Los Angeles where she is a speaker and advocate for her community. Her Made by Abbey venture, which started with her crafting hats on a hand loom, gave birth to a bevy of products she makes and sells, with a portion of the proceeds going to Southern California’s The Ed Asner Family Center.

A fan of thrifting, swimming, and lions, Abbey shared with us all the home-state adventures and attractions that brighten her days.

Where do you live? Los Angeles.

Why there? That’s where I was born and raised!

Who or what is your greatest California love? I love Disneyland because I’ve been going there since I was a little girl and Ariel is so important to me because she couldn’t get her words out and that's how I felt! But now these days I feel more like Cinderella at the ball.

What is your favorite Golden State splurge? I like going to fancy restaurants like Mistral in Sherman Oaks, where I can try new exotic foods because I’m a very adventurous eater. I’ve tried escargot, octopus, and oysters. Next I really want to find a restaurant where I can try rabbit.

Time for a road trip—where are you going? My cousin Mary and I would drive down to San Diego because the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is where you can sleep over and listen to the lions roar in the middle of the night. Then after we would go to Palm Springs because it’s very hot there so I would need to go swimming. It also reminds me of where they filmed High School Musical 2.

What is your favorite way to play in California? I love going swimming in the ocean, especially at Zuma Beach in Malibu because I finally learned to swim at 17 and it makes me feel like a real mermaid when I go far out in the ocean!

Where would you go for the ultimate shopping spree in California? My cousin and I love going thrift shopping at places like Dresscue, Buffalo Exchange, and the Silverlake Flea Market.

Best California song?California Gurls” by Katy Perry.

How would your California dream day unfold? Mary and I would leave from the valley and stop at Hidden Treasures in Topanga on the way to Malibu. It’s a cool thrift store that’s like a museum of vintage clothes! Then in Malibu we would go swimming in the ocean and see the house where they filmed Hannah Montana.

Then we would drive down the PCH and get on the Ferris wheel and roller coaster at the Santa Monica Pier. After that, I would get a “double-double, meat, cheese and bun only” from In-N-Out. Then we’d drive to the Griffith Observatory where you can get the best view of Los Angeles at sunset. After that we would drive home along Mulholland Drive so I can see all the pretty city lights while listening to music.
