Located in the East Bay just 25 miles from San Francisco, Walnut Creek has a vibrant, historic downtown filled with restaurants, wine bars, and galleries, but it is probably most known as a premiere shopping destination. Nature and culture, though, hardly take a back seat: By day, thousands of acres of nearby open space and Mount Diablo draw hikers and mountain bikers, and by night you can catch concerts and theatrical productions at the city’s impressive arts center.
Shops to Explore in Downtown Walnut Creek
With a combination of independent boutiques and big national retailers, downtown and the Broadway Plaza retail center have turned Walnut Creek into a major Bay Area shopping destination. An open-air shopping district, Broadway Plaza is anchored by brands such as Nordstrom, Macy’s, Free People, Apple, Kendra Scott, and lululemon. Beyond the plaza, the walkable downtown core is lined with locally owned shops specializing in home decor (Maker's Market, The Gardener), gifts (Portal Artesanal, Wish), fashion (Shop Jinny, Deliciouz), books (Rakestraw Books), and specialty foods (Verde Gourtmet, Babushka Market & Deli).
Shoppers can browse contemporary clothing boutiques, artisan jewelry stores, and lifestyle shops along streets such as Main, Locust, and North California Boulevard. The district is also known for its seasonal events, sidewalk displays, and public gathering spaces that encourage leisurely exploration between stores. With hundreds of retailers concentrated in a compact area, downtown Walnut Creek draws visitors from throughout the East Bay and beyond.
