Oakland native Sheila E. was surrounded by first-class music inspiration—thanks to dad Pete Escovedo and godfather Tito Puente, just to name a few—from a young age. But as the percussionist’s autobiography attests, she’s always marched to The Beat of My Own Drum. Playing since she was 3 years old, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter grew up to sell millions of records, score Billboard hits such as “The Glamorous Life” and “A Love Bizarre,” and collaborate with the likes of Prince, Marvin Gaye, Gloria Estefan, Rubén Blades, Stevie Nicks, and Cyndi Lauper.
When not entertaining fans all over the globe with her electrifying performances, the multitalented director-producer-author-philanthropist also heads Stiletto Flats Inc., her own entertainment company, and helps to nurture Elevate Oakland, a music and arts nonprofit she cofounded in 2011 that aims to bolster local students’ school engagement and mental health.
As a master of multiple musical genres, Sheila E. knows that there’s power in diversity. As she shares here, that carries over to all that she loves about the Golden State, from its fusion cuisines to the many shopping, cultural, and outdoor adventures it offers.
Where do you live? I currently reside in Los Angeles, which provides a fantastic base for my many projects and collaborations in the music and entertainment industry.
Why there? L.A. is a nexus for musicians and artists. It offers an endless array of opportunities for collaboration and creativity, which is essential for my work as a musician, producer, and CEO of Stiletto Flats Inc. Additionally, its cultural diversity echoes the vibrancy of Oakland, where I grew up.
Who or what is your greatest California love? My greatest California love is the deep-rooted music culture in Oakland. From the inspiring sounds of local legends like Sly & the Family Stone, Tower of Power, Santana, and of course, my dad, the legendary Pete Escovedo, to the rich, multicultural music scene that shaped my childhood, Oakland’s influence is irreplaceable and resonates deeply in my music.
What is the biggest misperception about Californians? Perhaps that we’re all living the glamorous life of Hollywood. In reality, California is filled with hardworking, diverse communities, each with their unique struggles and stories, much like the grit and grind I witnessed growing up in Oakland.
What is the stereotype that most holds true? That many Californians are incredibly passionate about environmental issues and personal wellness. There’s a strong emphasis on living an active, healthy lifestyle, which I’ve embraced through my music and personal philosophy.
What is your favorite Golden State splurge? Heading back to the Bay Area to soak in its vibrant arts scene and to perform at places like the Fox Theater and Yoshi’s in Oakland. It’s my way of reconnecting with my roots and giving back to the community through art.
Time for a road trip—where are you going? A nostalgic trip back to Oakland would be my ideal road trip. Starting from Los Angeles, I’d take my time driving up the coast, stopping to enjoy the natural beauty of California, before spending some time in Oakland reconnecting with my family, visiting local music spots, and supporting community programs like Elevate Oakland.
If you could decree an official state culinary experience, what would it be? A culinary tour of California’s rich diversity, highlighting Latin, Asian, and fusion cuisines. From taco trucks in Los Angeles to the incredible seafood, Mexican, Asian, Italian, and soul food in the Bay Area, it would be an homage to the mix of cultures that mirrors the eclectic influences in my music.
What is your favorite way to play in California? Performing live with local artists across genres in various venues, from intimate jazz clubs to large concert halls. These performances allow me to merge different musical styles influenced by my California upbringing and travels.
Where would you go for the ultimate shopping spree in California? I’d make my way to the Woodland Hills Topanga Mall. It’s a fantastic spot packed with a wide array of designer stores where you can find everything from high fashion to exclusive accessories. Taking a stroll through boutique shops in West Hollywood would complete the experience, perfectly capturing the diverse and cutting-edge fashion culture of L.A.
Best California song? “California Love” by 2Pac and Dr. Dre. Why? It’s an anthem that transcends time and celebrates this vibrant state in all its glory—its culture, its challenges, and its triumphs.
How would your California dream day unfold? My dream day would begin with a sunrise walk on the beach near my home in Los Angeles, reflecting on new musical ideas. Then, a flight up to Oakland to spend time with family, reminiscing and making music with my father and brothers. Lunch would be at one of my favorite local eateries, the Wood Tavern, followed by a visit to a music class to inspire young musicians. The day would culminate with a performance at a local Oakland venue, blending sounds from my past and present, surrounded by those who have supported me throughout my career. A perfect blend of love, legacy, and rhythms that tells the story of my California dream.
