Fly-Fishing

Cast a fly in the blue-ribbon waters of the Shasta Cascade region

Between the volcanic summits of Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen flow some of California’s most celebrated fly-fishing rivers. These teeming waterways lace the Shasta Cascade, enough to keep the intrepid angler busy hunting trophy wild trout for a lifetime. Spring creeks, freestone rivers, and tailwaters lie within an easy drive of one another, making it simple to chase a morning hatch on one stream and an evening caddis blizzard on the next. Consider the locations below—which add friendly mountain towns, reliable guide services, and long fishing seasons—and you’ve got one of the nation’s great trout regions.

Fall River Fly-Fishing

Fall River in Shasta County stands out with roughly 15 miles of crystal-clear, icy-cold spring water—it’s the perfect trout habitat, and the region’s crown jewel. Because most banks are privately owned, anglers typically fish by drift boat, pram, or float tube, gliding over weed beds that shelter hefty rainbows. Long leaders and precise presentations rule here; tiny mayflies and midges are the staple, with the famed Hexagenia hatch offering electrifying evening dry-fly action in late spring and early summer. It’s technical, serene, and unforgettable.

Pit River Fly-Fishing

The Pit is a boulder-strewn fantasy of remote canyon water, a naturally reproducing wild-trout fishery with a tough reputation. Wade carefully—flows are strong, rocks are slick, and a wading staff plus studded boots are wise. High-stick nymphing through pocket water produces hard-charging rainbows that live in fast seams and plunge pools. Despite its difficulty, the Pit rewards persistence with solitude and thick, athletic fish. When the bite turns on, you’ll find rainbow-filled pockets, perhaps with not another angler in sight.

Hat Creek Fly-Fishing

The lower 3.2 miles of Hat Creek, flowing into Lake Britton, form California’s original Wild Trout water. This historic stretch mixes glassy spring-creek flats with riffles and undercut banks, offering sight-fishing for selective trout. Evenings can bring blankets of caddis; during the day, small mayflies and terrestrials keep fish looking up. New anglers can learn the basics with local guides, while experienced casters hone technical skills on sipping fish that reward stealth and accuracy.

McCloud River Fly-Fishing

South of Mt. Shasta, the McCloud tumbles through a basalt canyon famed for its emerald pools and vigorous rainbows—the strain exported worldwide. Below McCloud Dam, cold, consistent flows fuel hatches from spring through fall. Expect pocket-water nymphing, dry-dropper rigs along boulder gardens, and occasional classic dry-fly moments in the tailouts. Access ranges from roadside pullouts to more adventurous hikes.

Upper Sacramento River Fly-Fishing

From the town of Dunsmuir to Shasta Lake, the Upper Sac parallels I-5, yet feels remarkably wild. Dozens of access points invite quick sessions or day-long rambles along granite runs and shaded glides. Stonefly nymphs shine in spring; summer evenings bring caddis swarms and attractor dry-flies; fall delivers October caddis and mayflies. Because fresh water pours in from countless springs, the river fishes well much of the year and is a favorite for wading anglers.

Planning, Seasons, and Stewardship

Prime fishing generally runs April through November, with shoulder-season opportunities whenever flows and weather cooperate. Regulations vary by river and reach—wild-trout sections often require barbless hooks and catch-and-release—so check current rules before you go. Rivers here are powerful; wear proper wading gear, watch flows, and never wade above your comfort level.

Consider hiring a local guide—outfitters in Dunsmuir and Redding, along with long-time pros from places like BollibokkaThe Angler Lodge, and The Fly Shop, can tailor days to skill level and season. Practice Leave No Trace, respect private property, and handle fish gently. Do all that, and Northern California’s volcanic trout waters will reward you with a classic Western fly-fishing experience.
