It's safe to say that Christen Press knows how to make a strong first impression. In her February 2013 debut with the United States women's national soccer team, a then-24-year-old Press pounced on a long rebound in the 13th minute and blasted a left-footed shot into the back of the net. Less than 20 minutes later the Stanford University alumna scored again, earning Woman of the Match honors and announcing her emphatic arrival on the greatest women's soccer team in the world.
Apparently undaunted by her surroundings, Press also scored in her first-ever Women's World Cup match, in 2015, and has amassed 41 goals (and counting) despite sharing the ball with legends like Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan. Press agreed to take the California Questionnaire and discuss her love for the Pacific Ocean, street tacos, and road trips up the coast.
Where do you live? I live and grew up in Palos Verdes. I think it’s Los Angeles’s not-so-secret hidden gem. My parents are still there, and I'm looking to buy a condo in Manhattan Beach. It would be hard for me to ever leave the South Bay.
Why there? The South Bay is home for me. I am one of those lucky people who gets to go home and realize that where I grew up is the best place in the world!
Who or what is your greatest California love? Undoubtedly, my greatest California love is the Pacific Ocean. When I see the ocean, I see home, familiarity, calmness.
What is the biggest misperception about Californians? People think Angelinos are all about the movie and entertainment industry. The beauty of the South Bay is that it is so chill and full of beach people. Everyone walks around in tank tops and flip-flops, feeling very grateful for the beauty that surrounds them.
What is the stereotype that most holds true? That Californians love California and will never leave! We won’t! We do think we have it better than the rest of the country. :) And I say that with gratitude.
What is your favorite Golden State splurge? My soon-to-be (and currently unknown) apartment.
Time for a road trip—where are you going? Santa Barbara! I love the beach and the mountains and the wine tasting all in one. It’s a beautiful drive as well.
If you could decree an official state culinary experience, what would it be? Mexican food, street tacos, and margaritas.

How would your California dream day unfold? A fabulous brunch filled with mimosas followed by an epic day on the beach with my friends—and most importantly, my puppies! Lucky for me I get to do this every year on my birthday.
