From almonds and olives up north to avocados, oranges, and dates in the south, the Golden State has a crop (or 10) for nearly every stretch of terrain. After all, California farms produce over a third of the United States’ vegetables and two-thirds of its fruits and nuts—not to mention a lot of wine. Behind all of those bushels and cases of goodies are many California-grown stories of family farms, plenty of which invite you to come and take a look—and taste.
Fresno County Fruit Trail
No matter where—or when—you are in California, there is a farming experience to be had. Stretching across the east side of Fresno County, the Fresno County Fruit Trail links dozens of family-run farms and fruit stands where you can sample just-picked nectarines, apricots, plums, and table grapes, depending on the season. Take a road trip along its path for peaches and cherries in the summer, or tour a farm outside San Francisco and learn about artisanal bread-making and beekeeping. Time your trip for May to take part in a variety of strawberry festivals, or dive in during the winter season to find weekends devoted to local dates, crabs, and even tamales. Many stops also sell house-made jams, dried fruit, fresh-pressed juices, and baked goods.
U-Pick Farms & Overnight Experiences
Plenty of farms around California also offer hands-on experiences during the year, from u-pick farms to overnights where you can milk cows and gather eggs—or just sit down to an artfully-rendered farm-to-table feast. Even if you’re road-tripping around the state, there are countless classic farm stands in small towns (some with wine tastings), while the big cities pull out all the stops at their farmers’ markets, which can be lined with not only producers but food trucks, gourmet coffee, sellers of hand-crafted goods and art, and live music.
Soil Born Farms
In the Sacramento area, Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture & Education Project offers a hands-on agritourism experience set on 55 acres along the American River Parkway in Rancho Cordova. Families can join guided foraging tours and bird-watching walks that spotlight local ecosystems and migratory species, or take relaxed nature strolls through the working farm.
Outdoor yoga sessions, cooking classes, and wellness workshops provide additional ways to connect with the land, while seasonal harvest volunteer days invite deeper participation in sustainable agriculture. On Saturdays, visitors can enjoy an organic brunch at Phoebe’s Café or browse farm-fresh produce, cut flowers, and artisan goods at the onsite farmers’ market.
Mar Vista Farms + Cottages
