Federal Government Shutdown
National Parks and Attractions May Be Impacted
Some federally managed parks, trails, historic sites, and monuments in California may be partially closed or operating with limited services during the federal government shutdown. While many outdoor areas remain open, some amenities and programs may be unavailable. Before visiting a national park, check the official National Park Service website for the latest updates on closures and conditions.
Currently known national park closures:
- Muir Woods National Monument: Muir Woods National Monument is temporarily closed. For a similar redwood experience in Northern California, visit Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve (70 miles north) or Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park (80 miles south).
California State Parks and Attractions Remain Open
California’s state parks and attractions are not affected by the federal shutdown and remain fully open. Explore California State Parks to discover a wide range of scenic and cultural destinations ready to welcome you.
Air Travel May Be Impacted
The shutdown is expected to have minimal impact on air travel. However, travelers flying to or within California should allow extra time for airport security screenings and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) entry procedures, as staffing levels and wait times may vary.
Wildfires
As is customary for this time of the year, California is experiencing several small to moderate wildfires, primarily in rural parts of the state. Please note that evacuation orders or warnings may be in effect for certain areas impacted by wildfires. Smoke from regional wildfires may also affect air quality throughout the state, and conditions can change quickly depending on wind and weather.
When planning a visit to California, visitors are encouraged to:
- Monitor Red Flag Warnings from the National Weather Service for fire-prone weather conditions
- Check wildfire updates from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)
- Review air quality conditions via AirNow.gov
