We partnered with award-winning podcaster and author Emma Gannon to explore the Golden State on her California Innovation Series. During her time in the California, Gannon met some of the state’s most innovative pioneers and dreamers, from pro skateboarders to scientists.
The Golden State is synonymous with board sports and, if they could, many Californians would learn to skate and surf before they learn to walk. Gannon visited Huntington Beach, aka Surf City, USA, to interview pro skater Sarah Thompson. The 22 year-old campaigns for helmet safety within the world of skating after suffering from two serious head injuries herself. Together they chat about what it’s like to live in such a diverse and welcoming California city, and how Thompson is working hard to promote safety in a male-dominated world, where wearing helmets and pads is often dismissed as “uncool.”
