X Games Summer Returns to Southern California

X Games Summer Returns to Southern California

The eight-day, multicity event will end with a weekend-long finals event in Ventura this July

Posted a month agoby Jené Shaw

More than 150 of the world’s best action sports athletes will compete this summer as the X Games makes a return to its roots in Southern California. On July 21–23, skateboard, BMX, and motocross final competitions will take place in Ventura after a series of qualifiers in San Diego and Los Angeles beginning July 15.

As the birthplace of skateboarding and BMX—two events slated for the 2023 Summer Games in Japan—California is a natural fit for welcoming fans back to a large festival for the first time in three years.

“For decades, California has been the epicenter of action sports, producing some of the most talented athletes in the world,” says Visit California President & CEO Caroline Beteta. “It’s only fitting that the X Games makes its way back to the ultimate state for play to celebrate the culture that inspired these incredible events. We’re honored to host the X Games in Ventura and can’t wait to see the next generation of extreme athletes take the stage.”

X Games has partnered with Visit California and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner to provide an easy, sustainable way to travel up the coast to the final events, which include skateboarding: Park, Street, Vert; BMX: Park, Street, Dirt; and motocross: Freestyle and Best Trick. The finals weekend, held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds & Event Center, will include surprise musical guests, an interactive festival, and to-be-announced athlete appearances.

“Our city has a long history of supporting big events, and it is an honor to be selected by the X Games to host this prestigious international competition in July,” Ventura Mayor Joe Schroeder says. “We look forward to welcoming thousands of athletes and fans to our community and showing the world all the unforgettable things Ventura has to offer.”

The ticket waitlist is now open for the finals weekend at Ventura County Fairgrounds & Event Center July 21–23. The full schedule of events will be announced in the coming weeks. “We are thrilled to return to the home of action sports this summer with reimagined events along the coast strengthening the fan experience whether you’re watching live in-person or on broadcast or a streaming platform,” said Steve Flisler, X Games CEO. “Ventura is rolling out the red carpet to provide the perfect weekend backdrop to highlight the progression of these sports and celebrate some of the greatest athletes on the planet.”
