California is open and welcoming visitors. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed and explore responsibly.
California Road Closures
For specific road conditions and alternate routes, check Caltrans Quick Map before traveling.
Highway 1 Is Open
Travelers can now drive the full Highway 1 route between Monterey and San Luis Obispo County. The Regent’s Slide section north of Lucia reopened on Jan. 14, 2026, restoring continuous access along the coast. Drivers should remain alert for occasional traffic controls or weather-related advisories.
This reopening makes it possible to experience all of Highway 1’s dramatic coastline, state parks, small communities, and scenic stops along this classic California drive.
California Wildfires: Essential Alerts
Wildfires are a natural part of California’s landscape and can occur during periods of dry weather and high winds. Most fires are quickly contained, but conditions can change, occasionally affecting travel plans or air quality in nearby regions. When planning a visit to California, visitors are encouraged to monitor Red Flag Warnings from the National Weather Service and check wildfire updates from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE).
More than 98 percent of Los Angeles was unaffected by the January 2025 wildfires, and major attractions, hotels, restaurants, and transportation systems are operating as usual. Wildfire impacts were limited to specific areas, and most travelers will not encounter disruptions.
California Air Quality: What You Need to Know
Air quality can vary across California, especially during wildfire season, and conditions may change quickly even if fires are not nearby. Checking a reliable, real-time air quality monitoring page can help you plan outdoor activities, from hiking and beach days to wine tasting. Use this air quality index page to view current conditions across the state and make informed decisions about your travel plans.
