Follow Highway 1 on the Central Coast from Monterey down to Ventura to experience one of the most iconic and beautiful stretches of road in the world. In the fifth and final episode California Pop, Anthony and Shikira experience some of the kitschy culture and tasty food the Central Coast has to offer.

Monterey County may be best known for oceanfront experiences, but in episode five the California Pop pair head inland to check out the area’s ranchero culture and thriving farmland. Next, in San Luis Obispo County, the crew explores two extremes: the opulent Hearst Castle and the fascinating Nitt Witt Ridge, a chateau of sorts created entirely from other people’s trash.

Carve out your own Central Coast adventure with some inspiration from the California Pop itinerary.

Bigfoot Museum

Located in Felton, just outside of Santa Cruz, the Bigfoot Discovery Museum was founded to educate the public about the paranormal bipeds that have captivated an international imagination. Visit to find plaster casts of footprints, photos, and maps—and don’t miss the nearby Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.

California Rodeo Salinas

Held over four days in late September, the California Rodeo Salinas delights guests with steer wrestling, bull riding, barrel racing, and more. It’s a fantastic way to experience Monterey County’s ranchero heritage while watching professional cowboys (and cowgirls) do their thing.

Gilroy Gardens

This horticulture-themed amusement park in Gilroy was founded in the 1970s by the head of a local supermarket chain. Today, families still delight in whimsical rides like the Mushroom Swing and Garlic Twirl. At the plaza, you’ll find the curious Circus Trees whose trunks shoot out like spider legs.

Gilroy Garlic Festival

The Gilroy Garlic Festival beckons thousands of visitors annually to celebrate this intensely flavorful member of the onion family. Attend this summertime celebration to watch cooking competitions, listen to live music, and taste every sort of garlic-based concoction imaginable.

Town of Harmony

This tiny hamlet (pop. 18), once home to the Harmony Valley Creamery Association, continues to pay homage to its dairy-fueled past. Stroll through the one-block-long Main Street to find painted cows, as well as a pottery studio, ice-cream parlor, and glassworks gallery.

Madonna Inn

Lean into your inner eccentric at the Madonna Inn. The lavishly decorated hotel in San Luis Obispo is a delight for the senses. Sip a glass of Rosé at the thoroughly pink Silver Bar Cocktail Lounge, spend a night in a themed room (think “caveman” or “love nest”), or head to the on-site stables for a guided trail ride.

Splash Cafe

There’s nothing like the refreshing Pismo Beach breeze to put you in the mood for a toasted bread bowl filled with savory clam chowder. Try the award-winning recipe at Splash Cafe, topped with fried bacon and fresh scallions.

Hearst Castle

Tour Hearst Castle’s meticulously preserved main house and grounds to see the sparkling Neptune Pool, magnificent Assembly Room, and an elevator where former First Lady Grace Coolidge once got stuck during lunch.
