Is it safe for visitors to travel to California during wildfire season?

California is a large state and wildfires in one location typically have no impact outside a limited area. In fact, a vast majority of the Golden State is currently unaffected by fires. Visit California’s first concern is always the safety and well-being of California residents and visitors, so we recommend that visitors who are planning a trip to California check out www.visitcalifornia.com and contact their hotel and local convention and visitor’s bureau for all pertinent updates.

Are there currently wildfires in California?

As of Sept. 10, there are a few wildfires burning in California. However, these fires are burning in rural California regions and the state remains a safe, accessible destination. Most tourism regions and California icons remain untouched.

There are active fires burning in Shasta County that have forced the partial closure of Interstate 5 and required resident evacuations. For the latest in the region, check out Visit Redding and the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association.

Wildfires may have an impact on air quality in California. For residents and visitors who are sensitive to air quality impacts, visit www.Airnow.gov

For the latest information on wildfires in the state, visit www.Calfire.ca.gov.

Are there any areas of the state travellers should avoid, or alternative routes to consider when traveling across the state?

Please visit the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) website for current information on travel and safety conditions.
