Travel an hour northeast of downtown Los Angeles, past winding mountain passes and sprawling valleys, and you’ll find a sun-drenched city in California’s Antelope Valley. There’s plenty to explore in this L.A. desert community, from wildflower-covered hills in the spring to vintage aircraft parks and a wealth of scenic trails worth exploring.

Outdoor Adventure in Palmdale

Start with the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, where every spring, the hills explode with acres of brilliant orange poppies—perfect for a stroll or a photo op. Time your trip right, and you may just encounter a rare and bucket-list–worthy superbloom

Continue your quest for striking views at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, known for its dramatic, jagged sandstone formation that’s starred in movies and TV shows, including Star TrekBill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and Blazing Saddles.

For the thrill seekers, the Los Angeles County Raceway Motocross (LACR MX) offers off-road races, tracks, and events. 

Nature lovers will appreciate the quick drive to Devil’s Punchbowl Natural Area and Nature Center, home to fascinating geological formations, live animal exhibitions, and miles of hiking trails that wind through desert and forest ecosystems.

Family Fun in the High Desert

Palmdale’s laid-back neighborhood feel provides a lot of family-friendly adventures too. At DryTown Waterpark, splashy fun comes in the form of wicked water slides and play areas, all open from the Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Nearby, Imagine City provides a creative, interactive space for little ones to explore, imagine, and play in an engaging, peewee-sized replica city.

Local parks here are not to be overlooked—literally. The basketball courts at Marie Kerr, Domenic Massari, Courson, and Desert Sands parks feature bold, colorful murals created in collaboration with NBA star and Palmdale native Paul George. Marie Kerr Park also features the Palmdale Amphitheater, which hosts events year-round, including drone shows, movie screenings, and free concerts. 

Golfers should be sure to book a tee time at Rancho Vista Golf Club, home to a sprawling 18-hole championship course with public access and mountain views.

Local Culture and Cuisine

Palmdale’s aerospace history is on full display at the free-admission Joe Davies Heritage Airpark and Blackbird Airpark, where aviation enthusiasts can get up close to historic aircraft, including stealth jets and vintage military planes, while learning about the city’s critical role in aerospace innovation. 

For a dose of local culture, check out the Palmdale Playhouse, a community hub for theater performances and creative events. Make a roadside stop at Charlie Brown Farms, a quirky country market packed with 6 acres of nostalgic candy, quirky antiques, and one-of-a-kind eats ranging from 150-plus milkshake flavors to the world’s largest slab of beef jerky.

If you’re looking for more conventional cuisine, try neighborhood favorites Baracoa Cuban Restaurant—a stylish eatery serving Cuban dishes with a cocktail bar and live music—or Broken Bit Steakhouse, a Western-themed steakhouse offering bison, sarsaparilla, and small-batch whiskies. Wind down at one of Palmdale’s local breweries. Popular spots like Lucky Luke Brewing and Transplants Brewing Company feature local and touring bands and inventive house-made beers.

Attractions Near Palmdale

Palmdale makes for a great home base for exploring popular hot spots in East Los Angeles County and neighboring Kern County—and all under an hour’s drive. Red Rock Canyon State Park showcases rust-colored badlands perfect for hiking and photography. Castaic Lake is a popular stop for boating, year-round fishing, and picnicking. 

For theme park fans, Six Flags Magic Mountain near Santa Clarita is a must, boasting more world-class roller coasters than any other destination on the planet. And if you’re craving crisp mountain air, the charming town of Wrightwood is known for its top-notch skiing and snow adventures at Mountain High.
