California Welcome Centers

Anyone who’s traveled to an unfamiliar area with the intention of experiencing as much as possible knows how invaluable the knowledge of a local can be. There is no better resource, and having it can make the difference between a ho-hum trip and a truly memorable one.

It’s the mission of each of the 18 California Welcome Centers scattered throughout the state to enable all visitors to have the best experience possible, and they take that local-is-best approach to heart. Each one is staffed with personal travel concierges, knowledgeable experts who are ready to provide information that will enhance and enrich your visit no matter what your focus is—the arts, local culture, family activities, sports, the great outdoors, shopping, or all of the above. They’ll have advice on what and where to eat, where to stay, and how to get there. Welcome Centers also offer free maps and brochures on local attractions, state and national parks in the area, and things to see and do.

Placer County is paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, wine connoisseurs, epicureans and history buffs alike. In Placer County you can hike among pine trees, raft the glorious rivers, mountain bike in the endurance capital of the world and then picnic under live oaks with a bottle of Mediterranean style wine all in one day. If it is a leisurely pace you desire, sip wine at an award winning winery in the central county communities of Auburn, Newcastle and Loomis, tee up at one of the many pristine golf courses or sail the emerald waters of North Shore Lake Tahoe. And finally, if history is what you are looking for, Placer County is rich with a bounty of museums and historic sites.

Allow our past to catch up with you as you visit our many antique shops and unique museums. Let a drive through our rich agricultural lands refresh and revitalize you. Feel pride in our heritage as you attend one of our fine festivals. Seek the quiet serenity of nature on one of our many wilderness peaks, or the thrill of a lifetime as you ski down one of Lake Tahoe's mountains.

Outdoor enthusiasts thrill at the county's abundance of year-round recreational activities while others marvel at the array of galleries, theaters, musical and festival events. Shoppers love the large selection of boutiques, specialty shops and farmer's markets. Everyone enjoys the variety of restaurant choices from fine cuisine to family style dining, and the range of lodging and accommodations from the luxurious to quaint and romantic.

Quintessential Southern California Beach Town

Note: California Welcome Center, San Clemente is temporarily closed. Please check back soon for updates.

Nestled in the heart of Southern California, San Clemente is the perfect starting point for your San Diego, Orange County or Los Angeles vacation. San Clemente boasts breathtaking ocean views, a year-round Mediterranean climate and Spanish Colonial-style architecture. Visitors can enjoy a weekend of adventures in this iconic Southern California beach town with historic attractions, a quaint downtown district, miles of scenic coastline and shopping at Outlets at San Clemente.

Featuring more than 60 stores and restaurants and home to Orange County’s only California Welcome Center, Outlets at San Clemente is the region’s only ocean-view outlet shopping destination. Fashionistas, outdoor enthusiasts, sophisticated shoppers, the fitness conscious, trend-setters, classic minimalists and others will find something to love here – and all at up to 70% off.

Beyond shopping, San Clemente is one of the top spots in Southern California for surfing with famed surf breaks, including Trestles, Calafia, Riviera, and Lasuens. San Clemente State Beach is popular among water sport enthusiasts and features mile-long sand stretching between the curling ocean surf and the foot of a steep bluff. Another favorite destination is the Pier Bowl, a natural topographical “bowl” that encompasses the historic San Clemente Pier as well as adjacent shops, restaurants, lodging and recreational amenities.

Discover a genuine piece of California history at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens. Perched on a bluff overlooking the historic San Clemente Pier, Casa Romantica was built in 1927 as the family home of Ole Hanson, a co-founder of San Clemente. Today, Casa Romantica hosts cultural exhibits, art performances and special events, and its 2.5 acres of coastal gardens show off water-wise and extensive native California plantings and one of the most scenic views in the city.

The heart of this “Spanish Village by the Sea” beats in the palm-lined sidewalks of Avenida Del Mar, the Mediterranean-styled downtown of San Clemente. The district features antique shops, boutiques, art galleries and outdoor cafes where neighbors linger. Vacationers can take back their own treasures from independent gift and jewelry shops, bookstores, clothing boutiques and surf shops. Plus, the weekly farmers market and monthly craft fair offer a local’s perspective on the tastes and treats of San Clemente.

From outdoor shopping to scenic beach sunsets and historic strolls to oceanfront relaxing, San Clemente’s activities suit the traveler in search of a quintessential Southern California experience.
