Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle
Live out your fairytale fantasies at this ornate Central Coast castle

Invitations to Hearst Castle were reserved for the elite—Hollywood stars like Cary Grant and political luminaries like President Franklin D. Roosevelt and former English Prime Minister Winston Churchill—during its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s. Now, public tours offer of a glimpse of the opulent lifestyle enjoyed by its owner, publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. Designed by architect Julia Morgan, the opulent 60,000-square-foot mansion (it took decades to complete) lords over golden hills of the Santa Lucia Range as they roll into the sea near San Simeon. Colorful summer blooms of bougainvillea mix with native bay and coast live oak trees. The castle contains Hearst’s massive collection of rare antiquities and art, and tours explore grand social rooms and private suites. In spring and fall, explore the grounds during the twilight hours with docents dressed in period costumes.
