Trip Time: 3 to 4 days
Start in Ventura by browsing the seaside town’s plethora of antique stores. Head northeast from Ventura into the rugged, pine-scented Los Padres National Forest
and Carizzo Plain National Monument. Hike the Caliente Ridge Trail for spectacular views of the Carizzo Plain and parts of the Cuyama Valley.
Turning west again, reconnect with civilization near the coast at Guadalupe, settling in at the Far Western Tavern for its famous barbecued top sirloin, fresh salsa, pinquito beans, and grilled French bread. Head south to Santa Barbara and pick up art bargains at the Sunday Arts and Crafts Show, then visit Lotusland, a stunning 37-acre botanical wonderland tucked away in the foothills of Montecito.
Continue south along the frothing Pacific’s edge, stopping to hike at Sycamore Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area
. Sea breeze on your face, drive the lovely coastal road to Malibu. Spread out a towel and watch the surfers at Surfrider Beach (just north of the pier).
The Route: From Ventura, head north on U.S. 101 then take State 33 north. Reach State 166 and go west to Guadalupe. Return to State 166 and go east to catch U.S. 101 south. Reconnect with the Pacific Coast Highway (State 1) and travel south.
