L.A. Architecture
See eye-catching icons and stately landmarks

While Los Angeles is still a young city when compared to places like, say, Rome, it still boasts a unique architectural tradition that spans a number of different styles. Perhaps best known is Frank Gehry’s flower-like, stainless steel-clad Walt Disney Concert Hall, an über-contemporary landmark in the heart of downtown that’s home to the L.A. Philharmonic (tours offered most days).

In stately Pasadena, visit an Arts & Craft era masterpiece, Charles and Henry Greene’s 1908 Gamble House. Frank Lloyd Wright designed several important houses in the area, including the Mayan-influenced Hollyhock House in L.A.’s Barnsdall Art Park. Want more? Docent-led tours offered by the Los Angeles Conservancy visit such standouts as historic movie palaces downtown, Art Deco stunners, and Union Station, the 1939 Streamline Moderne masterpiece.
