Enjoy Mendocino County’s unique and historical charm along California’s Redwood Highway. This two-day trip can be enjoyed from either travel direction, with the primary location being the historic town of Willits. Visitors can stop at a California Welcome Center (either in Arcata or Santa Rosa ) to gather additional information on the area. Throughout the drive along the Redwood Highway scenic byway, you will see opportunities to stop and take in the view of the beautiful towering Redwood forests.

Drive north on Highway 101 to the Solar Living Institute in Hopland. Take a tour of the world-famous, non-profit sustainability education center and participate in a demonstration. Continue north to the historic town of Willits for lunch at the Loose Caboose . Expect your taste buds to go crazy with their amazing sandwiches, shakes and the best vegetarian chili within 1,000 miles. After lunch, continue north past Laytonville to drive your car through the base of a living redwood tree at the Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree . Most cars should fit nicely in the 6' wide by 6'9" high opening, but parking is available for larger vehicles, tour buses, and motor homes. For the first day finale, stop at the National Historic Landmark, Campbell Bros. Confusion Hill just north on Hwy 101. Be prepared for mystery, fun, and family entertainment when you explore the World Famous Gravity House, the Redwood Shoe house, and the World’s Largest Free Standing Redwood Chainsaw Carving. Enjoy the sunset through the tall branches as you travel back to Willits for an overnight stay at one of the town’s lodging options. For dinner, catch a quick burger and the best onion rings at Busters Burgers and Brew in downtown Willits.
All aboard the Skunk Train ! Enjoy the vintage rail cruiser on a half-day, round trip tour from Willits to Northspur, one of the busiest logging camps in the Noyo River Canton. Food and beverages are available as train riders soak in the breathtaking scenery along the Noyo River. Best time to experience this adventure is April through October. Upon your return to Willits, pack a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon exploring the Mendocino County Museum and Roots of Motive Power . The Museum offers a historical perspective of the county, transportation, and logging industry. The picnic grounds are a perfect setting for a lazy afternoon of eating and playing on the children’s playground or in Recreation Grove.
