Take a Perfect Pedal Along the American River Bike Trail

Rents bikes to cycle solo or join a fun guided tour.

With generally flat terrain, the Gold Country region around Sacramento makes for excellent cycling. One of the best ways to roll on two people-powered wheels is along the American River Bike Trail . This 23-mile paved route, stretching between the Sacramento River banks at Old Sacramento east along the American River to Folsom Lake. Don’t have gear? No worries. Try Fast Eddie’s Bike Tours , offering bikes, helmets, even lunch—and you’ll get a knowledgeable guide (maybe even Fast Eddie himself) who will share interesting tidbits on history, wildlife, and local lore. If you want to do it yourself, rent a cruiser in Old Sacramento at Practical Cycle (you can also get self-guided directions for the entire route, or join a guided trip) then pedal as far as you’d like. Along the way, you’ll pass through leafy riparian stretches rich with wildlife (keep your eyes peeled for river otters). Keep your eyes peeled for shallow waters perfect for dabbling your toes—but be careful, river currents can be tricky.
