Culture, sports, and nature all have their place in one of North America’s largest city parks.

It’s only fitting that L.A.’s largest park is as varied and diverse as the city itself. And 4,000-acre Griffith Park  certainly has a little bit of everything.

In many ways, it’s a classic city park filled with timeless family attractions including miniature train rides and a historic merry-go-round. Other visitors flock to Griffith Park for its cultural attractions. Here’s a place where you can explore the history and culture of the American West at the Autry National Center or ponder the mysteries of the cosmos at Griffith Observatory. And the Los Angeles Zoo lets you go nose-to-nose (at least through exhibit windows) with orangutans, gorillas, and chimpanzees that live in naturalistic habitats; renowned primatologist Jane Goodall has noted that the zoo’s chimp enclosure is one of the world’s best.

Duffers love the challenge of Griffith Park’s historic Harding Municipal Golf Course while bicyclists tour miles of lightly traveled roads (bike rentals are available in the park if you don’t have your own). And with huge expanses of open space crossed by a network of trails, there are almost limitless options for hikers, mountain bicyclists, and equestrians to slip into everything from shady forests to dramatic chaparral practically in the middle of the city.
