Stroll past stars honoring entertainment standouts, big and small

Right up there with Instagramming a shot of the Hollywood sign, a stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame is celebrity-lover’s rite of passage. The terrazzo-and-brass stars embedded in the sidewalks lining several blocks of Hollywood’s downtown streets honor luminaries in five categories: radio, TV, motion pictures, live performance, and recordings. Walk Hollywood Boulevard from Gower to La Brea, plus a short stretch of adjacent Vine Street, to discover stars honoring obvious picks (Richard Burton, Marilyn Monroe), surprising finds (Jack LaLanne, Lassie), and some obscure but enlightening entries (like William Daeterle, German leading man and director, a Jew who fled to the U.S. in 1930). If you’re looking for a particular star, use the Walk of Fame’s online “starfinder ” search tool.

The Walk of Fame was inaugurated in 1960, when 2,500 blank stars were embedded in the sidewalks. More than 2,400 of those stars have been inscribed to date, with unveilings usually attended by the honorees and their celeb pals—a great way to nab star sightings when you’re on vacation. Go to the Walk of Fame website to find out more about upcoming star events .
