Ringed by 18 mountain resorts, Lake Tahoe is famous as a winter-sport destination. But it also makes an idyllic summer trip with its one-two punch of water and mountain fun. Try this summery-day plan: Start the morning basking on the sand at Kings Beach , along the lake’s northwest shore. Rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards to explore the clear shallows. Or kick it up a notch with a speedboat rental.

When you’ve had enough water play, take the ultra-scenic half-hour drive around the lake’s western shore and Tahoe City, then head northwest 7 miles to Squaw Valley . At Squaw, gain some serious altitude with a soaring gondola ride up to High Camp , perched at 8,200 feet. There, you can splash and swim in a beautiful freeform swimming pool ringed with snow-capped peaks—the ultimate cool-down on a warm summer’s day (and the margaritas you can order from your chaise don’t hurt, either).
