Explore the natural world of one of San Diego County's best-preserved coastal habitats.

San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve was established to protect Southern California's diminishing coastal wetlands. The reserve also offers all sorts of recreational opportunities for visitors. Covering 1,000 acres, San Elijo lets you hike seven miles of trails. As you walk through the reserve, you'll be able to spot a rich variety of birds (319 species have been observed here). To get oriented, be sure to stop by the reserve's impressive nature center, which is built of recycled materials and uses solar panels. Or head out on a free weekly docent-led tour.
