See Sinatra’s Desert Modern home in the Movie Colony

He may have sung about New York, New York, but when it comes to truly capturing Sinatra’s style and swagger, it’s Palm Springs that takes top honors—and the town has the goods to prove it. Sinatra built his first major home, known as Twin Palms and designed by E. Stewart Williams in 1947, spread out here, on a hillside, with a commanding view of the surrounding Coachella Valley. With its prominent use of glass, deep overhangs, and emphasis on indoor and outdoor living spaces, Twin Palms became the pinnacle of glamorous but casual living, and cemented a genre known as Desert Modernism. Get a look at the head Rat Pack-er’s pad, and celeb homes of Jack Benny, Cary Grant, and other luminaries, on tour of the town’s Movie Colony community.

Feeling a splurge coming on? You can actually book a stay at Sinatra’s desert pad, where a chip in a bathroom sink came from a champagne bottle that Ole Blue Eyes pitched at Ava Gardner when they had a fight about Lana Turner. You have the place to yourself, but it isn’t cheap: stays run several thousand a night, and there’s a three-night minimum.
