Get your hands on science at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center! With more than 400,000 visitors each year, the Fleet is one of San Diego’s most popular attractions. Explore our eight interactive exhibit galleries with more than 100 exhibits to fascinate all ages. Our permanent collection features a tornado you can touch, a turntable that allows you to set disks spinning, and a Tinkering Studio where you can create, invent, and explore. For kids five and under, we have a gallery just for them: Kid City, where kids rule! The Fleet also hosts traveling exhibitions on a regular basis, focusing on a variety of scientific topics.
The Fleet is home to Southern California’s only Giant Dome Theater. The Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Dome Theater features a 76-foot tilted dome with a NanoSeamTM screen that immerses the audience in spectacular images. A 16,000-watt surround-sound system amplifies shows like never before. The dual-use theater hosts both an IMAX® projector and a GSX™ digital projection system and shows IMAX films and digital productions. The Heikoff Giant Dome Theater also offers the Rear Window closed-captioning system, assistive listening devices, and headsets that allow visitors to listen to available Spanish soundtracks.
On the first Wednesday of each month, the Heikoff Giant Dome Theater features The Sky Tonight, an astronomer-led planetarium show that takes audiences on a tour of the night sky and explores current topics concerning the cosmos. Weather permitting, the San Diego Astronomy Association provides free telescope viewing outdoors in conjunction with the show.
When you’re ready to take a break, grab a bite to eat at Galileo’s Café. Galileo’s serves sandwiches, salads, nachos, pizza, coffee drinks, ice cream, and more. Outdoor seating features views of the spectacular Bea Evenson fountain. Before you depart, shop for a souvenir in the North Star Science Store. The store boasts a wide range of interesting items, from science kits to IMAX DVDs to eye-catching T-shirts.
